Sometimes life is hard. The more and more I grow up, the more I realize that. There is so much added responsibility once you are an "adult"... you know the whole, "wake up at the crack of dawn, sit in traffic for an hour to get to work" thing is not for the birds.
However serious some of your responsibilities may seem, sometimes you just have to see the silver lining, and when all else fails, laugh at yourself. Now, why would I be talking about this unless I had some examples... well...
One morning, on my way to work I had my handbag, tote bag, coffee and breakfast in my hands. I was putting the stuff into my car and all of the sudden, I realized an entire piece of my hair dipped into my coffee. What was my silver lining in this situation? Well, I like the smell of coffee! Then, once I got to work, I had my foot on the break but totally didn't put my car into park or use my emergency break. I was literally stepping out of my car and it started to roll backwards. Talk about a scary two seconds. Silver lining? Nothing bad really happened. Afterwards I just laughed... and laughed and laughed.
Another morning, I woke up, got dressed quickly, and ran out the door. I had a cute outfit on. I had suede heeled booties (see above photo to see their cuteness) and didn't pick out my socks (which I usually do...weird, I know) and I was so cold that morning that I put on pink fuzzy socks. You better believe that they were poking out of the top of my booties. Now, this seems so trivial to most, but it threw off my entire outfit! I didn't realize I did it so I just ended up laughing at myself all day when I saw the fuzzy pink popping out.
See, you look around your world and see all of these other people who seem to have it "all figured out" and think there are certain people that are so "put together", but most are not. The whole saying "fake it 'til you make it" could not be truer for anyone in their 20's.
My way to fake it? There are just a few simple things that can make you feel better, and more "in control" of your day.
- Freshly manicured nails and toes. I don't know about you, but it drives me insane when my nails are chipped. Even worse? When I don't have polish on my toes! Remember the product I posted about a few months ago? It literally makes my at-home mani last all week! Since it is still lent, I am not getting gel manicures, but when you know you have a busy week, a gel mani is the way to go!
- Style your hair. I've been on this kick since November where I have been really trying not to use heat on my hair. Sometimes, I'll even sleep with a wet head and wake up and run a brush through it. Well, that doesn't always make me feel the best. So, who cares about the heat on your hair, just style it and make your hair look fabulous!
- Eat a good breakfast. Nine times out of ten, I eat whatever I can scrounge up in the 5 minutes I give myself for breakfast, but occasionally I take the time to stop at Starbucks/Brueggers (or in my case, even McDonalds... because I am obsessed with their bacon, egg, and cheese bagel). Having a delicious breakfast starts your day off in a good way.
- Wear lipstick/lipgloss (excuse the "a**" in the above quote, Gwynnie said it, not I!). I don't know what it is about having something on my lips, but it makes me feel 1,000 times better about life. Kids, don't do drugs, just wear lipstick! (I kid, I kid).
- Go through your planner and make sure everything is correct. White out or erase anything that's incorrect and cross things off your to-do list. Ok, maybe this is just me?
- If you are a blogger, queue up some blog posts. Knowing that I don't have to sit down at night and write blogs posts after a long day (on the computer) at work make me able to go computer-free at home. I usually reserve Sundays for lining up the week's posts.
- Clean your space, put on Frank Sinatra/jazz/symphony station on Pandora, light a candle and just read a book. Or, in my case an issue of Town and Country.
- When all else fails, coffee, my friends, is the solution to all issues.
So how do you "fake it"? Have a fabulous day!
Yours,
sCe
