Nicole Scherzinger's "Run" - Single Review

Is it actually happening? Have the pop Gods finally given in? Former Pussycat Dolls leader Nicole Scherzinger has unleashed her latest U.S. targeted single, "Run", her first in the states since the underrated "Don't Hold Your Breath" in March 2011. While Nicole's upcoming album Big Fat Lie was supported by the poppy "Your Love" in the UK this summer, the U.S. is treated to the somber ballad as the official lead offering.

Often overlooked and disregarded for past drama, one must commend Scherzinger for not giving up and sticking with her hopes of a successful solo career. While her "debut" album was scrapped entirely, and her Killer Love effort only saw an overseas release, let's hope the artist's new ballad will be just what she needs to gain her footing in the competitive U.S. market. With a tragic backstory, beautiful vocals and a simple sound, Scherzinger may have finally succeeded.

"Run", a powerful and raw ballad where Scherzinger sadly dishes out advice to the next girl in her ex-lover's life, is a departure from the uptempo, energetic dancefloor anthems we have heard from Scherzinger in the past (see "Wet", "Club Banger Nation" and "Try With Me"). Instead of a bass-heavy, beat-driven track, we get an emotional number where a lonely piano is heard supported Scherzinger. "Don't ever search for that four-letter word, you'll never get it out, you try and try and try, but he'll just shut you down," the artist belts on the somber effort.

After trying to invade the states with catchy pop tunes, a genre Scherzinger has proven capable of dominating, it seems she is trying a different tactic with her upcoming second solo album. "Run" won't make people get up and dancing like "Boomerang" or "Whatever U Like", but it definitely showcases her immense talent and tremendous vocal abilities. The ballad is both heartbreaking and empowering, as it further proves why the former Pussycat Doll deserves to shine on her own. Fingers crossed!
