The Fairbanks community can breathe a sigh of relief. The Vintage Junky is here to provide the only consignment option in town, topped off with a shop overflowing with boutique-style gifts and accessories to spice up everything from your neck to your apartment wall.

Bristyn Hunziker is only 20 years old, but she has managed to create a thriving one-of-a-kind business in East Fairbanks.

"I've always wanted to open up a boutique," Hunziker said.

Hunziker bought the business at the age of 19 after working a few years at her first job for another boutique in town that has since closed.

"I never knew I wanted to open up a consignment boutique. I was more into the retail, cute gifts and clothing and all that good stuff," Hunziker said. "I just decided after that after they closed that Fairbanks still needed a consignment shop so we could all reuse so that's how it started."

Her sense of style goes much further back though.

"My sister is a hair dresser. My mom loves decoration, so it's definitely in the family," Hunziker said.

The shop offers a fun mix of style for women of all sizes. Hunziker said she likes to take in anything from size XS up to 4XL.

"It just really depends on what gets brought in on consignment, but I like to have a little something for everyone," Hunziker said.

For customers interested in consigning gently used clothing and accessory items, they can bring items into the store at which point Hunziker will price the items. Once they sell, customers can receive 40% of the sale price if they wish to get the money back or 50% to the sale price to spend in the store. Items are able to remain on the floor for up to 60 days, after which Hunziker can donate the items or customers can come in to pick up.

Hunziker said the store provides a mix of items. Most of the clothing is consignment but she also sells candles, soaps, artisan items and other small decor.

"I love the independence that owning your own business gives you," Hunziker said. "I can decorate how I want and select what I want to carry. I get to be my own boss."

The Vintage Junky opened April 2018 and since then Hunziker said the business has been nonstop.

"It's been great ... like, really great," she said. "I was a little surprised. I knew it was going to be good but people have just been so supportive; it's been amazing."

Hunziker said she's heard over and over that Fairbanks lacks adequate, affordable shopping options.

"So there are other boutiques, but I think sometimes people don't like to spend the big bucks, so they appreciate the low prices here," she said, noting the average top costs around $12 at her store.

The Vintage Junky can be found at 29 College Road, Suite 4, in the small mall area next to REI. Call 907-374-0640 to ask about consignment options or have any of your other questions answered.

Hours of operation are 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Tuesday-Friday and noon-5 p.m. Saturday.
