Sony Magnetic tape with 185TB of data storage capacity announced
Sony has announced that it is working on magnetic tape that can store up to a massive 185TB of data on a single cassette, which will be used for backing up data on these instead of using other SSD or other hard drives, and cloud services.
The company’s new technology of extremely high density tapes could be of use for big agencies and institutions to store data in a rather cheaper and reliable system than using other storage modes.
This magnetic tape comes with a capacity of 18.5GB per square inch, which is over five times the capacity of the cassette developed by FujiFilm and IBM which could store up to 35TB of data on a single cassette. The new magnetic tape in fact is equivalent to 74 times the capacity of usual tapes which are used for archival purpose.
Sony has not yet commercialized this new technology, however Sony has mentioned that it would commercializing this next generation tape storage media along with even thinner layer deposition technologies for better recording densities on their devices in future.
