Former Kenya Sevens head coach Benjamin Ayimba during the Safari Sevens at the Moi Sports Centre Kasarani in 2013.
On Thursday, news broke that Kenya's rugby legend was in a serious medical condition and needed an urgent medical condition.

According to his family, Ayimba has been in and out of the hospital since last year, and his current hospital bill stands at over Ksh.2 million.

The former rugby player is said to be suffering from cerebral malaria, a condition that has kept him out of the hospital since the beginning of the year.

"Benja has been in and out of the hospital since late last 2020 after being diagnosed with cerebral malaria," the family said in a public post.

A report by a local daily says that Ayimba is currently in the High Dependency Unit (HDU) at a Nairobi Hospital and can hardly speak or recognize anyone.

According to his family, they kept Ayimba's condition out of the public to protect his privacy and dignity.

“All this while we have tried to maintain his privacy and dignity but it has reached a point where we can’t keep quiet anymore," a family member told The Standard.

Now that family has been overwhelmed with the hospital bill, they are now pleading with the public to help them raise the bill and also facilitate his transfer to another hospital for a better facility.

To help in raising the medical bill for the legend, Kenyans are asked to forward their contribution through Paybill No: 8021673, and the account name is; Benjamin Otieno Medical.

Ayimba, a former Kenya rugby player and coach, is critically ill and has been in and out of hospital since January. He is currently said to be admitted at the High Dependency Unit (HDU).

Odinga’s visit and a meeting with Ayimba’s family comes a day after Nairobi Senator Johnson Sakaja announced that President Uhuru Kenyatta had paid Sh1 million of Ayimba’s Sh2.3 million hospital bill.

“Thank you President Kenyatta. Kindly Raila Odinga, William Ruto, and Musalia Mudavadi join in,” he said.

Ayimba’s best moments as a rugby coach were when he led the national sevens team to the historic triumph at the 2016 Singapore Sevens tournament. It remains Kenya’s only title at the World Sevens Series.

He also played for Kenya at the Rugby Sevens World Cup.
